Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Steve Barba is a New Hampshire Original. For 47 years he worked at the Balsams Resort in Dixville Notch, going from teenage golf caddy to President of the company. In that time, he played a key role in reviving a grand hotel in decline. Today, the Balsams is a destination for vacationers from around the world and, every four years, residents of Dixville Notch go there to cast the FIRST ballots in the presidential election. Barba is now the Balsams Innkeeper Emeritus. Outlook's Richard Ager visited with Barba in Dixville Notch in 2005 and looked back on his 5 decades of involvement in the North Country's economy and community life -- as part of our "New Hampshire Originals" series. 8:55-9:05 |

On March 29th Barba was honored by NH's Tourism industry and professionals for his many contributions to the state. Barba is taking on a new role -- he's now the Executive Director of University Relations at Plymouth State University. |

Next, we meet a NH man who also did something original. Jack Kraichnan spent a year hiking the same trail "everyday' throughout every season writing hai-ku poetry. He wrote 3 poems a day --and then turned his year of work and experience into a new book. Outlook's Chip Neal spent a sunny winter day on that same trail with him in the southeastern town of Dublin. |
